The Old Barn Resort
Root River & Harmony-Preston State Trails

The Root River State Trail and Harmony-Preston State Trail meet right on the 200-acre property of the Old Barn Resort.  Together they offer more than 60 miles of paved trails for the cyclist's, walker's and roller bladder's pleasure through some of the most scenic countryside in the state.  From the Barn the Root River trail runs east along the River to Lanesboro, on through the towns of Whalen, Peterson, Rushford, and finally to Houston.  Just West of the barn on barn property the two trails meet- Root River continues to Fountain and Harmony-Preston State Trail goes to Preston first then on to Harmony.  For distance measuring on the map below - Isinours Junction is just a about a mile from the Barn.  The trail is directly linked to the campground so no shuttling, transporting, or roads are required to get on the trail!

As this is Amish farming country, one might see horse drawn farm equipment or buggies.  Experienced cyclists will tell you the trail is of excellent quality- very smooth and well kept.  It also offers a great combination of natural beauty and fun things to do in the small towns along the way.  It has been rated Minnesota's 'most scenic trail' and connects directly with The Old Barn Resort.  Don't forget, rollerblading and walking are also very popular on the trail.

One of the best parts of the trail is that it is meticulously maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and so far is available free of charge during the spring, summer and fall.  (It is groomed in the winter for cross-country skiers at a small charge - however, we are seasonal and are not open during that season.)

Bicycle rentals are available at the resort!
Reservations for rentals are recommended.
