Recreation
Whether you want to stay close to the resort
or explore the surrounding countryside and
communities, there are plenty of indoor and
outdoor recreation options for all ages.
ON SITE
The Old Barn Resort Restaurant and Bar and Rivers’ Bend Golf are both
enjoyed by campers and locals alike and both are open to the public.
Besides our own Rivers’ Bend Golf, there are enough courses within a half
hour radius of the resort for the avid golfer to play a different one every day
for a week, making for a memorable golf vacation. The Old Barn’s course is
the only 18-hole course in the county. However, the 9-hole courses are very
enjoyable and definitely worth the short drive to them.
Sand Volleyball, Basketball, Horseshoes and our three-season indoor
heated Swimming Pool, a great Game Room with Pool Table and Dart
Machine are also located right here. The pool is usually open from May 1
through mid-October. We even have a small library where you can take,
borrow or leave books.
Are you meeting family or friends in the area who want to join you at The
Old Barn? Daily guests are allowed on-site from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. for a charge
of $4.00 per person per day. This allows your guests to be in the
campground or hostel with you and also to enjoy the use of these on-site
activities with you.
STARTING AT THE OLD BARN RESORT
State Bike Trails
Adjacent to the campground are beautifully maintained bicycle trails.
Without even having to shuttle or go on roads, you can bike, walk and roller
blade through some of the most scenic natural areas in the nation. The
Root River Trail and Harmony-Preston Valley Trails connect to each other
on our property, so you can bike right from here through the countryside to
many of the quaint towns linked by the 60-plus miles of paved trails. In the
summer the trails are free of charge. They are also groomed for cross
country skiing in the winter with a small fee for grooming (although we are
not open during the winter season).
The Root River
If you enjoy river activities, you can start a Canoe, Kayak, Tube or Fishing
Trip right from our property. The Root River provides some of the best
recreational waters in the area for a refreshing float trip as well as world
class areas for trout fishing and other other types of angling.
Canoes, kayaks and inner tubes are available for rent on-site. Click here for
rental information. (Reservations for rentals are recommended on
weekends and holidays.)
The valleys of the Root River attract anglers for excellent trout and bass
fishing. Over a mile of designated trout stream (the South Branch of the
Root River), which runs through the property, is home to stocked and native
trout. The many trout streams in the area provide excellent waters for both
fly fishing and bait-and-spinner fishing.
You can also catch bass and panfish on the North Branch of the Root River,
just a 10-minute drive, and walleye, northern and panfish south of the dam
in Lanesboro, also about 10 minutes’ drive. The South and North Branches
of the Root River join in Lanesboro just past the dam and then continue to
the Mississippi at LaCrescent, Minnesota.
Parents, if you are with your child under age 16 and are fishing in a
designated trout stream, you are required to have a license with a trout
stamp. The link below will fill you in on all the trout fishing information you
will need from the Minnesota DNR so you can enjoy all of your vacation
knowing the rules and regulations along with tips for successful area
fishing.
